OneApp Do's and Don'ts

It's school choice season in New Orleans, which means it's time to dig into OneApp. Here are a few tips to help you manage the process like a pro.

DO know the deadlines and submit your application on time

In 2018-19, the early window deadline is Jan 11, 2019. You only need to worry about that early deadline if you are interested in certain selective admissions schools (see our FAQ and for details). The main round deadline is Feb 22, 2019. Be sure to submit at least a few days before the deadline so you have time to adjust if you run into any technical problems.

DON'T worry about filing your application on the first day

Submitting on the first day doesn’t improve your chances. Nothing happens with your application until after the deadline.

DO think through your priorities

You may not be able to get everything you want, so think about what matters most: A certain location? Academic program? Extracurriculars? What could you compromise on, if you had to?

DON'T fixate on brand names

Some schools are really well known and attract a lot of applications (think Baby Ben, Alice Harte, etc.) It’s worth considering these schools, but there are also good schools out there that aren’t as well known. Be open and don’t disregard a school just because you don’t know much about it.

DO research your school options

There are a number of good online tools that can help you find and compare schools easily. Start with these:

DON'T forget to look into the details

For example, not all schools start and end at the same time, which could be a problem if you have multiple children in different schools. Check EnrollNOLA for details about scheduling, transportation, and other issues that can have a big impact on your daily life.

DO list more than 1 school

Especially if you are trying to get into a very popular, in-demand school, some of which receive hundreds of applications for every seat. Be flexible and include a mix of options in your list.

DON'T list any school you would NOT be comfortable with

Your child can be assigned to any school on your list — and once assigned you won’t have the chance to try again with a different list.

DO reach out if you need help

There are multiple ways to get help if you need it. Start by checking the EnrollNOLA website, which offers videos and other resources in multiple languages. If you still have questions, call 877-343-4773, email, or visit a Family Resource Center for in-person support. You can also find articles, tips, and resources from EdNavigator, right here.
